On August 8th 1303, a violent earthquake laid the lighthouse into ruins. It remained thus for over a century, until Sultan Qaitbey constructed the fort that stands were the lighthouse once stood (above).
 

  Dawn breaks over Egypt’s Mediterranean Coast. Here, in the year 331 B.C., the renowned Macedonian conqueror Alexander the Great founded Alexandria; thirty kilometers west of the fertile Nile Delta, between the coast and Lake Maryut. Dinocrates of Rhodes laid its infrastructure; first the walls, then the street grid and the harbors then the fresh water supply and buildings.

Of all the monuments, the Island of Pharos and its lighthouse were the subject of international interest due to legendary status as one of the seven wonders of Ancient world. The island of Pharos gave the lighthouse its name. The structure became so famous that the word "Pharos" meant "lighthouse"
