| Lake
Burullus is protected under Prime Ministerial Decree
1444/1998 largely for its importance for wintering waterfowl
and breeding species but also for its cultural significance
as there are local populations of fishermen, farmers
and people involved in other activities, including tourism. However,
the lake itself and the marshes round it are diminishing
due to land reclamation and coastal erosion. A further
threat is ongoing pollution of the water with chemical-laden
agricultural drainage.
The exhibits for Lake
Burullus are designed to highlight the diversity of
the area; its wildlife; its fisheries and its people.
The goal is also to raise awareness of the lake's importance
and to contribute to safeguarding the integrity and
viability of this valuable national resource.
