In partnership with local
people the Saint Katherine's Protectorate has constructed
a model Bedouin ecolodge in Wadi Gerba near Sheikh
Awad, by refurbishing some abandoned traditional houses
and gardens. Here visitors can have Bedouin-mediated
experiences of the cultural and natural features that
make the St. Katherine area unique. The ecolodge,
with a capacity for about 18 persons, has been built
to operate on the principle of minimal environmental
impact thereby offering very basic facilities - it
has waterless composting toilets and the showers are
water efficient and solar heated. Guests will use
their own bedding and sleep on locally made mats,
laid on raised platforms within the rooms or outside
in the garden. The lodge is owned and will be managed
by local Bedouins. It is hoped that in time this idea
will be replicated throughout the Protectorate to
provide visitors with million star accommodation.
