Abu Galum is
the third of the protected areas of South Sinai and
is located to the north of Nabq. In this area the high
coastal mountains are represented as well as the coral
reefs for which the Red Sea is famous. Along the Gulf
of Aqaba the coastal plain is narrow and this protected
area plays an important part in regulating land use.
It also acts as a buffer zone between land development
focal points along the coast, while working to protect
the natural resources that form the backbone of the
local economy and are a great part of the area’s
attraction for tourists.
The Nubian Ibex, Capra nubiana, is found here, safe
on virtually inaccessible peaks until it has to come
down to drink at the waterholes below. The reefs are
among the finest in the world and work is still going
on to discover just how many creatures live in, on or
around these systems. The numbers are in the many thousands.
As in all the protected areas in Sinai, the local community
is important to the success of the enterprise and plays
an active part in its management.
